Every year it happens the same way. The cycle end approaches, and a profession that spends its working life managing other people’s deadlines discovers it has left its own to the last fortnight.
The problem is not the hours
The requirement itself is rarely the obstacle. Most consultants comfortably do enough qualifying activity across a year. The problem is that the activity happens in January and the recording happens in May.
CPD is not hard to earn. It is hard to remember you earned it.
Log it when it happens
A webinar attended in February takes thirty seconds to record in February. The same webinar takes considerably longer to reconstruct in May, when you are trying to remember the provider, the date and how many hours it carried.
Track against the target, not the deadline
Seeing “14.5 of 18 hours logged” through the year is a very different experience from seeing a date in the calendar. One tells you where you stand; the other only tells you when it is too late.
- Record each activity as it is completed.
- Keep the running total visible against the cycle target.
- Let the principal approve as you go, not in a batch.
The quiet version
Done this way, the end of the cycle is uneventful. The hours are already there, the evidence is already attached, and nobody spends a fortnight in May reconstructing a year.
